Silence of the Snow (collab with @25infive)

You wander into a crowd of trees. Tall pines with boughs weighed down with snowfall. The soft crunch of winter beneath your feet while steamy puffs of air drift around you as you exhale. The silence of the wintry woods draws you in as it does the traveler in Robert Frost's "Stopping in the Woods on a Snowy Evening." You can hear the wind blowing through the trees, echoing, ominous, every noise magnified by the silence of the snow.

Above you the winter sunlight reflects on the snow. Your nostrils sting with fresh, crisp air, and you pause to take it all in — the gentle evergreens standing sturdy against a backdrop of pure white. In the stillness, you are met with a thick silence. For the first time in a long time, you feel heard.

In the Dead of Night

The glare of the computer screen shines on your face. It's 1 am and you're still awake, remembering. Scrolling through old Xangas, Tumblrs, Blogspots. Remembering your youth and your innocence and the people who were once important to you. Where are they now?

In the darkness, the glow of your screen is a passageway into another world.

Remember the sadness that used to hang over you, like a filter through which you saw unreality. It’s gone, you tell people, that time has passed. It gets better, you tell the ones who are still trapped in it, just hang in there. And it’s not a complete lie. It is better. You are better. This is no longer an unreality. But in the dead of night, when the past footprints you once left on the internet push through the stillness, you wonder if you just got better at pretending.

Remember, in these moments, that you are here.

Cold Sunday Morning

You open your eyes when the sunlight hits your eyes through the crack in the blinds. In between the sheets it is warm, comforting, irresistible. There is nowhere you need to be, nothing you need to do, at least not right now. You close your eyes and take a deep breath - the smell of fresh laundry fills your nose and you snuggle deeper into the blankets.

Your awareness floats between awake and dreaming, when suddenly you feel another body next to you. A furry face appears over the blanket, staring you right in the face, excited. You pet his head and scratch his neck, and he settles in a comfortable position - for him. With no alarm to snooze, you savor this feeling.
